I did not know about this exhibition before stumbling across it after visiting the exhibition at Waddington Custot.

Second visit Thursday 20th June.

On this occasion I captured images of the Morandi paintings for further consideration especially in respect of the small paintings by Philip Guston that were on show at Tate Modern.

Third visit, Wednesday 3rd July.

I had arranged to have a look at the Catalogue Raisonné at my old place of work to get the full details of the paintings for reference

I checked the images on this web page with the originals and the overall contrast is reduced and the colours are warmer in the originals.

I was particularly interested in the colour and tonal values within the objects depicted and the brushstrokes that make up the picture surface.

I think that the variety and consistency of colour and touch within the context of this small group of paintings is remarkable.

The light on the surface of the painting catching the brushstrokes and linking to the colour within the paint is very special in my view.

I see no problem with the Artist re-addressing the varying compositions repeatedly as everywhere one looks outside of painting there is infinite visual interaction!

The Artist simply has to find a focus.

My one concern from this exhibition is regarding the framing, which for some of the works is simply too close and agressive. Seeing the edges of the canvases, without close physical interruption, as in the Artist's studio, would be ideal.

I had found the same consistency of expression in the group of small Philip Guston paintings that were shown recently at Tate Modern

They were shown as a tightly packed group as there was an historical precedent in the artist's studio but I think that it would be great to see them given much more space, as with the Morandi works in this exhibition. Then, maybe, the subtlety to be found in each individual painting would not be lost in the noise of the adjacent works.

Final visit, Wednesday 24th July.

I was glad to make the opportunity to refresh my memory of these delicate but intense small paintings. I captured images of the three works where the framing is least intrusive and have desaturated these images to make them look more like the original images.

I was given the Catalogue reference 1360 for the 1948 painting which I had missed when I reviewed the Catalogue Raisonné. The images there are dark with heightened contrast so it was sometimes quite difficult to identify the paintings!
