Dana Schutz Thomas Dane Gallery, 14 October - 20 December 2025 No.3 and No.11 King Street
Wednesday 29th October.
The Rally, 2025
oil on canvas
218.4 x 304.8 cm
I had decided to visit this exhibition having seen a couple of small images in The Guardian, I thought, but then could not re-find them.
(top row images from No.3 King Street, remainder at No.11)
The Mantle, 2025
oil on canvas
238.8 x 358.1 cm
An excuse to get back to the Gursky exhibition was also in play and the rainy conditions made for a short walk between galleries. I arrived at No.3 at 10:59am and made my way to No.11 before ducking into Mason's Yard.
The Kiss, 2025
oil on canvas
213.4 x 162.6 cm
Lesson on a Boat, 2025
bronze
124.5 x 134.6 x 100.3 cm
I am still road testing the 24/70mm lens so this was another chance along the familiarising process. The zoom aspect gives plenty of scope in gallery spaces and I am coping with high ISO settings and noise removal subsequently given the need for hand held capture.
The lighting levels were reasonably consistent between the two spaces but I think that there was more daylight filtering in at No.11.
There was a fresh oil paint odour on the air and it was the wet paint aspect that had partly attracted me to the exhibition. The colour palette was broadly similar across the exhibition and quite often had an intense green highlight among a predominance of red.
Daily Wear, 2025
oil on canvas
213.4 x 223.5 cm
The Example, 2025
oil on canvas
203.2 x 254 cm
No.11 Duke Steet Gallery is on the first floor and consists of a series of well appointed rooms. The space at No.3 is on the ground floor and has a more industrial feel!
Dark passages have just about remained articulated in the images here and there is not too much flare.
The figuration occasionally became illustrational in some of the paintings which I have not included here.
I recognised an affinity with some of Max Beckmann's paintings and according to the receptionist/invigilator that reflects Dana Schutz's interest.
The bronze sculptures were interesting in the clay coloured matte patina but were illustrative rather than sculptural in my estimation.
Two Men in Chairs, 2025
oil on canvas
198.1 x 182.9 cm
The Eaters, 2025
oil on canvas
182.9 x 228.6 cm
It was quite a 'fun' exhibition for a rainy morning in late October!
While I am not likely to re-visit I am quite happy to have found this show and visit Thomas Dane Gallery for the first time.
