I had determined to re-visit this exhibition as I had not captured images of many of the Morandi works and it quite quickly became apparent why that was. The Scully works on paper are all behind low refelction glass bar one!

By comparison the Morandi works are all behind normal glass which makes them much less easy to focus on the works, the reflections in the glass being unavoidable.

I decided to go ahead and get in as close as practical, ignoring the frames.

By comparison the 2024 pairs of drawings are mostly clear of immediate reflection, except in darker areas of drawing.

This was a very good small exhibition. I will go back and spend some time looking at the permanent collection at some point not least because it is a simple train ride away from Hackney Central!

From the web site:- This autumn, the Estorick Collection presents a special intervention by celebrated artist Sean Scully (b. Dublin, 1945), showcasing a body of his work alongside that of Italian master Giorgio Morandi (1890 - 1964). The pairing reflects Scully's longstanding dialogue with the imagery of Morandi who, though ostensibly a figurative painter, "learned the lessons of abstraction", as Scully observes.

A small exhibition but one that repays gentle contemplation of the means of expression.

The drawings and prints capture a lightness of touch but plenty of conviction, both sides of the room.

Good to see a small selection of recent works by Sean Scully, paintings, drawings and sculptures.

After spending some time looking at the works in this room I did look at the other gallery spaces with works from the collection and temporary exhibitions. It is a compact venue, well presented; and a change from the larger London public galleries.

I will probably make time to re-visit this exhibition, not least to capture a few more images of the Morandi drawings and prints.

Fortunately, I have the memory and record of the exhibition of Morandi paintings back in 2024 at Nahmad Projects.
