Memory is an elusive 'thing' but I did find the slim hardback volume that was the catalogue for the Waddington Galleries exhibition in 1984. I subsequently found the Whitechapel Art Gallery publication which was published in 1983 in conjunction with Stedelijk Amsterdam and Kunsthalle Basel.

The paintings that I remember best were from 1984 illustrated in the Waddington catalogue.

This was after getting home from White Cube today.

I will have to visit the exhibition again as I did not get a checklist of the works exhibited and then found that there was little online to aid the completion of this page.

I was a bit uncertain at the first walk through of the exhibition but then settled on looking at the final 'eagle' painting. I gradually working back through the galleries before taking a final walk around.

I have not followed the artist's career since the 1984 exhibition but did find connections in the paintings and works on paper in this exhibition.

The depth of paintwork that I remember from the 1984 paintings seems to have long gone from the artist's practice replaced by a thinner, maybe more knowing, application of paint.

I am wondering if I might be convinced on reflection or by means of follow-up visits if I find profound merit in these late works.

I can certainly sense that the artist was determined, day by day, to continue working!
