After visiting the National Gallery exhibition 'Siena: The Rise of Painting' I had decided that I should take a look at the Courtauld Collection in more depth as I had glimpsed some related works.
Today I had to make a collection on The Strand so took the opportunity to spend a short time exploring the Courtauld Galleries.
I was keen to find more of the 'early' paintings where architectural elements were integrated into the compositions and framing devices.
Three works stood out and are illustrated in date order!
Bernardo Daddi (active 1312-1348)
Virgin and Child with Saints, 1338
Egg tempera and gold leaf on wood
Princes Gate bequest, 1978
Master of the Judgement of Paris (active around 1400-1450)
The Annunciation, Around 1430-40
Egg tempera and gold leaf on wood
Mark Gambier-Parry bequest, 1966
Quinten Massys (1466-1530)
Virgin and Child with Angels, Around 1500-1509
Oil paint on wood
I did follow on through the gallery spaces but rather quickly arrived on the top floor with the wonderful Cézanne paintings...
A slightly different photo process will have to proof checked next time I visit and I have included the sizes of the Cézanne paintings as they are available in the Catalogue Raisoneé.
Paul Cézanne Les grands arbres au Jas de Bouffan, 1885-8 oil on canvas 65 x 81 cm
Paul Cézanne Le Lac d'Annecy, 1896 oil on canvas 65 x 81 cm
