Flare 1988
222 x 300 cm (6 square metres)
New for Cervia 2025.
The Four Rokkaku sails from 1992 will be flown individually alongside the 1992 Jørgen Møller Hansen Rev1/Not Zen sails.
The three parafoil kites may not all be flown together but the smaller 1992 kite may be flown with the RSS Rev sails as it is manageable in the higher windspeeds.

25th March 2025
250 cm Rokkaku spreaders, 3 new sets.
Team kite bag extracted for checking.
Sanity check for Rev1 ferruled rods.
The ferruled rods are too long for the drum kit case so travel in the ski board bag.
12 ferruled Rev1 Green Race, 9 ferruled Rev1 Race, 33 standard Rev1 Race, 36 standard Rev1 Green Race
A bag of miscellaneous spare Rev1.5 spars has been located as well as some RSS vertcal spars. Added to the main Rev1 standards spars bag 25th March.
The kites have been counted back into the case and a new battery is in the 'find my' carrying bag but not inserted yet.
Two RSS sails have to be added as they have occasionally been used on Blackheath over the winter. The tarpaulin will then be added!
26th March 2025
300 cm Rokkaku spines and Flare spreader production line.
The component spars arrived this afternoon and were assembled, cut and plugged accordingly. The Flare lower spreader and verticals may be tackled in the next few days and there may be an opportunity for a test flight on Sunday 30th March!
27th March 2025
The Rokkaku spine rods have been finished and colour coded.
The rods have been packed with the sails and provisionaly put in the JMH Kites bag. The spare horizontals and the spar set for the kite arriving in Cervia via France are in The Decs Rokkaku bag.
The Flare 1988 spines have been re-measured and two rods prepared to tension the sail to check measurements for the horizontal spreaders.
The lower spreader has been measured, cut, plugged and fitted. The kite may get a trial flight on Sunday 30th March.
Spar end details.
29th March 2025
The lower pocket repair has been done on the JMH Flare 1988.
A new piece of dacron has been sewn inside the original material which was also consolidated using heavy duty tape.
The new dacron was sewn across to the centre fin internally so the the spar could not be inserted past the pocket.
The spar was re-inserted to check that there was no change in the required length. At some point the top pockets will need to be re-worked.
Without spar.
With spar, tensioned.
31st March 2025
There one immediate objective today to locate the bridle components for the 1992 Rokkaku kites, 3 of which are currently stacked together.
Ironically they were located almost immediately and then re-tied to the bag for the four kites. That was where they were previously located until noted missing!
A test flight of all four may be possible on Sunday 6th April.
The second objective was to see, 'in place', the various components, linesets and a few small tools.
A couple of extra single lines were wound off.
2nd April 2025
There was a mess of banners floating around that need to be folded and put in a 'bag'!
The individual bridles have been set on the 1992 Rokkakus and it is hoped that these can be flown on Sunday 6th April although it looks as if there will be too much wind.
The tarpaulin has been added to the Team Kites bag on top of the final 2 RSS sails.
Just need to insert the battery into the tracing device!
3rd April 2025
The set of six banners were 'neatly folded' and packed into a drawstring bag.
Then the other lower pocket on the Flare 1988 was checked and found to be slightly torn so the same repair was applied.
Further close examination of the top pockets revealed further degradation of the fabric so an appropriate fix is required.
The fixed lower pockets, one showing tape glue residue and discolouring.
The velcro fastening 'method' would probably not have lasted long which it is presumed why it had been discarded.
The full rod lengths are too long for the ski board bag so have to be broken down for air shipping.
4th April 2025
It was decided overnight that the only sensible way to proceed was the full prusik knot solution. The slightly narrower end caps had to be drilled and then the initial elements of cord and dacron were prepared. The spar sleeves were unstitched, the cord anchors sewn in place and then the sleeves were re-instated. The existing pockets were left in place.
Tying the prusik knots remains to be done but is relatively simple to do and they are replaceable!
5th April 2025
Curiously, while threading the cap should be straightforward it was actually a challenge due to the size of the drilling compared to the 'string'!
Some final sewing is required to reinforce the main attachment cord fixing point.
The prusik knot slides as expected and locks under tension.
6th April 2025
The main attachment point was secured by sewing through the dacron either side of the anchor line and the main reinforcement corner of the kite.
7th April 2025
The first try at packing the JMH Kites bag was reasonably successful but the parafoil sails need to compress a little to allow a few additional items for extra protection. Added and weighed at 25kg.
14th April 2025
The first try at packing the FJM Kite bag was reasonably successful but the parafoil sail need to compress a little! The problem is that personal luggage was supposed to travel in this bag as well as kite kit
15th April 2025
So, in order to make space the parafoil sail was removed. It was put into the big bag with the sand bags, ties and trowels being transferred as well. At the same time to two Carl Robertshaw Rev sails were slipped into the big bag.
Some new lockable luggage straps were acquired today to supplement the existing one.
The new weight was c27kg so well within the limit.
