I had set out to visit the National Portrait Gallery this morning but intended to follow on to revisit this Kiefer exhibition at Mason's Yard again.
I had taken a 50mm lens so hoped to have a little more space for image capture.
Being able to reduce digital noise in the images allows just enough depth of field to capture the paintings at an angle!
The depth of the 'underpainting' in these works continues to be engaging...

In the meantime the details of the paintings continued to 'delight'!

I had booked a visit to the Jenny Saville exhibition based on the images used in publicity and the Jonathan Jones review in the Guardian.
I was pursuing the possibility of finding the palette that I had found back in the early eighties...
In the event I went around the exhibition repeatedly and did not find what I was looking for. Eventually I saw the partial image in the bookstall and was able to find the painting from which it was taken.
The painting is 'Drift',
oil and oil stick on canvas, 2020-2022
It is a monumental exhibition but I was exhausted by the deft visual flourishes... elements... tricks... manifestations... components... structures... illustrational flourishes rather than painterly necessity...
