Final visit on Thursday 14th August. I was not going to make further images but found a distraction in the sheer detail of the paintings. (and the floor!)
An aerated slab articulated with heavy impasto and sometimes relieved by the reflected space of the gilding. Considerable effort is given to creating a matte surface which can then be punctured by coloured or gold elements.
An apparently
sprayed surface is held in space by the cracked support surface. A visceral love of the multitude possibilities of paint! Depth of preparation and development then the 'constructions' of mixed pigments are extraordinary!
The rooks, or should that be crows, inhabit the space in the sky created by the gilded surface which competes in brightness with the overhead gallery lighting... By contrast a shadow may be cast over the top of a scythe painting. That a 'grey' surface is created by way of voluptuous colour is a painter’s lesson.
Then I set off for Bermondsey little knowing that there was a further treat in store!
