Fifth visit on 21st October and I had taken a DSLR rather than a phone camera so have repeated some details where focus may be lacking in the phone images. There are some interesting differences in overall colour rendering.
The images were 'noisy' as a high ISO value was needed in the low light without the 'magic' interpretation available via the phone camera! However noise reduction has been applied 22nd October.
On balance the focus and colour rendition are favourable.
I am getting closer to catching the very specific colours and almost silvery oily look of this painting!
The Public Park at Arles Arles: October, 1888
oil on canvas
72 x 93 cm Private collection
Entrance to the Public Park in Arles, September, 1888 oil on canvas
72.5 x 91 cm The Phillips Collection, Washington
Again, catching the specific palette is important but here the narrow depth of field f1.8 means that some of the image is not focused!
Vincent's House in Arles (The Yellow House) 1888 oil on canvas
72 x 91.5 cm Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
28/10/2024 The colour proofing was particularly interesting as the digital image is just a bit more saturated and brighter than the original. The colour rendition through the yellows is very close.
Another image, 4th November which was initially much too dark but may be closer to the overall saturation of the original.
This detail has captured the close toned colours much better than in the phone camera image.
There may be visual evidence of old condition issues here.
A further detail shows the slightly 'washed over' appearence of some of the close toned colours. I am not quite sure what the banked material is in this composition. Maybe I'll have to read the notes!
The Bedroom Saint-Rémy: early September, 1889 oil on canvas
73.6 x 92.3 cm
The Art Institute Chicago
The solidity of the table and chairs is quite fascinating, the paint takes on the reality of the depicted object in some way!
I'll have to try this shot again as the floor is in focus but the chair is not. 28/10/2024 A replacement image inserted. I was interested in the blue/grey door(?) to the right of the bed.
A work in progress as at 21:00 22nd October!
Self-Portrait, Saint-Rémy: late-August, 1889
oil on canvas
57 x 43.5 cm
National Gallery of Art, Washington
The old image on www.vggallery.com of this portrait is hardly recognisable.
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)
Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear 1889
oil on canvas
This painting is at The Courtauld Gallery in London.
Vincent's Chair with His Pipe Arles: December, 1888 oil on canvas
93 x 73.5 cm
National Gallery, London
It looks as if the tacking edge of the canvas ended up on the face of the painting top left.
Still Life: Vase with Oleanders and Books, Arles: August, 1888
oil on canvas
60.3 x 73.6 cm
Lent by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Loeb, 1962
I was attracted to the calligraphic elements in this painting on the table top.
An alternative shot inserted 28/10/2024
The Bridge at Trinquetaille Arles: June, 1888
oil on canvas
65 x 81 cm Private collection
The composition with the bridge is quite awkward and the vestigal figure is interesting.

A further detail added 28/10/2024. Unfortunately the limited depth of field means that the yellow sky is not in focus! The colour seems quite consistent.
View of Arles, Flowering Orchards 1889

Better resolution in the close ups.
I remain excited to see such eloquent paintwork and colour use.
28/10/2024 A proofing check of the colour today was very encouraging and this painting is well represented in these shots!

28/10/2024 A further attempt to capture the top of this painting.

Enclosed Wheat Field with Peasant Saint-Rémy: early October, 1889
oil on canvas
Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields Gift of James W Fesler
28/10/2024 The 'soft' wall is just a bit too 'warm green', it needs toning slighty towards alizarin.
